The Governance Committee Coordinates Written Appraisals of All Volunteer Directors on the Board

“How are we performing?” and “How can we do a better job in our volunteer role?” are two equally important questions for NPO directors.

Just because volunteer directors may not be paid for their board service does not mean that the NPO should have no performance standards.

Hence the need for performance feedback to directors at least annually.
An effective volunteer appraisal system will help that committee identify candidates for future, more senior roles on the board. Also, the evaluations can identify training needs for the board members. For example, if most directors respond that they have difficulty understanding the financial reports provided by staff to the board, the solution to this problem may well be to arrange for a seminar for the entire board on that subject.
